Coatings
CrN & CrCN
Eifeler's CrN & CrCN (Chromium Nitride & Chromium Carbo Nitride)
CrN Coatings are the best choise for applications where abrasion as well as corrosion and oxidation resistance are required. CrN shows good sliding behavior at deficient lubrication. The hight hardness together with very low brittleness allow to deposit thicker CrN coatings with very good adhesion. This provides for many applications an additional wear reserve.
Applications of CrN
Machining
Milling, turning, drilling and cutting tools for machining of non-ferrous materials especially Ti and CU alloys.
Forming
Drawing, stamping, punching, piercing tools of non-ferrous materials, especially Ti and Cu alloys, plastic moulding, aluminium and magnesium die casting.
Plastic processing
Tools under corrosion and abrasion wear , e.g. due to aggressive and hard filler materials.
Coating properties
- Low stress
- Good adhesion
- High corrosion resistance
- Low friction coefficient against steel
- High temperature stability on air
- Higher coating thickness possible

Application examples
Piercing of Cu Sn 6 alloy
Speed: 120 strokes/min. Material thickness: 1,0 mm
Material:Cu Sn 6 alloy Lubrication: common oil
Stamping of Al-alloy CrN coated tool after 293.000 stamps - no wear visible!
Speed: 120 strokes/min. Material thickness.: 1,0 mm

Coating process
The CrN coating is produced using Eifeler's PVD arc technology. This allows coating substrates such as tool steel, HSS, cemented carbides and many other materials at temperatores lower than 450°C.
